• CONFORMATION TYPE EVALUATION: Distinctly different types among the whole curly horse population, and different histories, and different regional development of bloodlines, are a reality in the Curly Horse. Crossing distinct types, can work well, or, it can work poorly. Consciously making the decision to cross 2 divergent types should be done with educated caution and awareness. Also very rare bloodlines have been led to near extinction by indiscriminate outcrossing of divergent bloodlines. These facts are not about criticizing or judgement. They are about increasing education, awareness, and promotion of rare horses that need protection to survive. Type identification is simple, and is not a big deal. We offer that option on a private, personal basis when requested.
• CONFORMATION CARD GRADING: The objective of card grading is to evaluate individual animals relative to a breed or type standard and assess their potential as breeding stock. Informal, private card grading evaluates any individual within a group of animals, strengthens breeders’ understanding of the characteristics and attributes of their type and/or breed, and still encourages the protection of genetic diversity within the breed. This is in contrast to competitive judging, which encourages uniformity by rewarding only a single “best” animal within a show class. This works in hand with type evaluation, in identifying the differences within curly horse bloodlines & types.
